Butikiro Eco Farms Organizes a Hass Avocado Field Day at Nsonga Village in Mukono District
Butikiro Eco Farms Uganda Limited in collaboration with Mukono Avocado Cooperative Society and the HortiFresh Association of Uganda organized a “Hass Avocado Field Day and On-Farm Benchmarking Event” on 16 March 2025 at Nsonga village, Nakisunga sub county in Mukono district. The objectives of the event were: 1) To provide participants with practical on-farm training on key avocado farming practices; 2) To enable participants to share with each other knowledge, concrete experiences and lessons learned, which they can leverage and integrate, as appropriate, into their own operations; and 3) To catalyze and encourage ongoing farmer-to-farmer learning and networking.
Organized under the general theme: “Embracing good agricultural practices for increased production of quality avocados”, this event focussed on the following topics:
- Introduction to agroecology principles and soil health soil health;
- Introduction to precision avocado crop nutrition management for increased yields and fruit quality, including the importance of soil testing and preparation of systematic fertilizer application plans and schedules
- Demonstration of the MAK Agrometer, a simple rapid soil testing tool developed by Makerere University;
- Integrated pest and disease management and compliance with sanitary and phytosanitary standards; and
- Orchard canopy management (including pruning and tree training) for maximum yields.


The training was conducted by agronomists with extensive experience in avocado crop husbandry. The training included practical on-farm demonstrations and hands-on practice.
